Discovering the Magic of Tzfat: Where Art and Mysticism Meet

Perched high in the mountains of Northern Israel, Tzfat (also known as Safed) has been a sacred pillar of Jewish life since the 16th century. As one of Judaism’s Four Holy Cities, it has long served as the world’s beating heart for Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism.

Walking through the Old Jewish Quarter—often called the Synagogue Quarter because of its 32 historic houses of worship—feels like stepping back in time. The neighborhood is a beautiful maze of narrow alleys and winding cobblestone streets, where 16th-century synagogues are still filled with the sounds of prayer, Torah study, and vibrant Shabbat celebrations. These streets, connected by ancient stone staircases, cling to the mountainside and are so intimate they can only be explored by foot.

Just a few steps away is the Artists’ Quarter, a hub of creativity where local artists open their home studios, galleries, and workshops to the public. Between its spiritual energy, cool mountain breeze, and breathtaking views, Tzfat has naturally become a favorite destination for those seeking a soulful retreat.

A Personal Reflection: "This piece was inspired by a photo I took during a Birthright trip with NYU’s Bronfman Center. Tzfat was the destination I was most excited for, and it truly lived up to the hype. There’s something incredibly rare about a place that blends art and spirituality so seamlessly. I felt like the only way to truly capture that feeling was to paint one of its winding streets—and it certainly helped that every corner was accented with that perfect shade of turquoise I love to use in all my work."
